Okay, let me qualify the title of this post a little bit. Eventually in your pursuit of a Big Why you will need to figure out how to go about accomplishing something. All the thought, inspiration, and planning in the world are worthless without action. As the old saying goes, if knowledge was all you needed we would all be rich, skinny and happy right? So while action is a very important step, you need to have a plan first. And before you can have a plan, you need to have a purpose. You need to know why you want to do something; otherwise, what is the point?
But when you are just getting into the initial stages of figuring out your purpose, please take my advice and DO NOT worry about how something will get accomplished or what that looks like in your life. The mistake many people make when they start thinking about the purpose of their life is that they start thinking about how they are going to accomplish something. This question inevitably leads their thinking in the opposite direction of their intention and it drifts toward how it can’t be done, rather than how it can. You will immediately start thinking about all the problems, all the obstacles, all of the reasons why you won’t succeed. The how at this point is irrelevant. If you knew how to do something you probably would have done it by now. As German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche first coined, “He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.” I would like to tweak that statement a little bit. He who has a why to live for, can figure out almost any how. “Why” is a much better question.
So set your sights on something huge. There is a reason I call it a Big Why. I mean, get truly unrealistic when you declare your Big Why. As Thomas Edison said “If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves”. We have too many limiting beliefs about ourselves already. So just this once, while you are trying to figure out your Big Why, take the blinders off and really go for it. God created you for much more than average, He created you for significance. He also gave you imagination and creativity. Use them both. As William Arthur Ward said, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” So go on, start imagining and dreaming. Get started on becoming something amazing.
