Too many of us are aspiring to be average.
The problem is you were not created to be average. You were created for significance. You were created in the image of God. What it really boils down to is we in the United States of America are comfortable. There is no more dangerous place to be than comfortable. Once we reach a certain standard of living (average) or a certain status in our social circles (average) we are so comfortable with where we are that we stop looking for the change to better ourselves. Change equals growth, and without growth we actually begin the process of dying.
So what is so wrong with average you might ask? The problem with average is that very few people are actually THE average. Think about this logically. How do you get the average? You take whatever metric you are using to measure something and then divide it by the total number of that something. So you might have literally NOBODY that is actually average. For example, if you added the numbers 1-9 and excluded the number 5 (a total of 8 numbers), you get 40. 40 divided by 8 equals 5. The average did not even exist prior to creating it!
Based on that, what is average in people? I don’t think it exists. Everyone is so unique across a spectrum of metrics that in one case the average might be truly excelling for someone given their background, skillset, resources, athletic ability, whatever the case might be, and for another person the average might be a huge letdown from their true potential.
So rather than looking at the average and quitting because you have already achieved it or because it seems so unrealistic for you, try ignoring whatever anyone says is average. Don’t worry about average income or intelligence or status or physique or whatever you are concerned with. Look at where you are, where YOU would like to get to, and then just take the necessary steps to go from A to B. And once you get to B do it again. Before long you will look at whatever the “average” is considered to be and you will have already by far surpassed it, because you have achieved the significance for which you were created in the first place. More to come on this thought…
